blown awe with this debate. nothing that i expected, did mitt romney win the debate or obama lose the beabt? >> both. i thought the president was unfocused, he was, at times, not clear in the answers, but governor romney showed me during a side of the personality not seen before. he was likable, yes, but decisive, clear, and he moved to the center appealing to inexcellents and moderates. gerri: showing up in the numbers too. steven, you were on hand for for obama today, what did they say? >> they took 12 hours to figure out what the spin was because it was not ready last night. they were late getting to the spin room last night in denver. they settled on a line which was mitt romney might have looked good and sounded good, but everything said was false. he was lying one after another after another. what was interesting on the conference calls, they didn't give much supporting evidence. it's one thing to make the claim, but another to support it in a way to convince the people you're listening to. president obama might be able to do that on the campaign trail talking to partisan democr

the first debate and strong performance by romney and weak by obama, probably means romney will at the end of the series have a gain. the gain is the impact is generally two to three points which may not sound like much, but when you're in a close as a race as this one is, and it is close. the track is five points as you said. take a look. there's 91 polls in the last 30 days, 91 national polls, not state polls, national polls, and the margin's been over two points. if mitt romney moves up two points and president obama moves down two points, there's another contest here with somebody else in front. lou: look at the swing states, looking at rasmussen, romney ahead in virginia and in ohio, romney a point behind the president where there was a significant lead, as you know, for the president. this is having some influence early. is it likely to be more profound as days go on? >> well, in all likelihood, this will build itself in for three or four more days here. there could be a lengthened -- and then the vice presidential debate that i suspect ryan takes care of biden in good form,

. i welcome you to the first of the 2012 presidential debates between president barack obama, the democrat nominee, and former massachusetts governor, mitt romney, the republican nominee. this debate and the next three, two presidential, one vice presidential, are sponsored by the commission on presidential debates. tonight's 90 minutes will be about domestic issues, and it will follow a format designed by the commission. there will be six, roughly 15 minute segments with two minute answers segment. thousands of people offered suggestions on segment subjects or questions via the internet and other means, but i made the final selections, and for the record, they were not submitted for approval to the commission or the candidates. the segments, as i announced in advance, will be three on the economy and one each on health care, the role of government and governing with an emphasis throughout on differences, specifics and choices. both candidates will also have two-minute closing statements. the audience here in the hall has promised to remain silent. no cheers, applause, boos, hiss
